Medical Abortion (Abortion Pill)

Early Medication Abortion: Typically used up to 10 weeks gestation. It involves taking two medications, usually mifepristone followed by misoprostol, under medical supervision. Mifepristone is taken first to block progesterone, a hormone needed to sustain a pregnancy. This is followed by misoprostol, usually taken 24 to 48 hours later, which causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

Surgical Abortion

Induction Abortion

This method may be used for pregnancies 14 to 23 weeks after conception. It involves inducing labour to deliver the fetus. The process is similar to full-term labour and delivery and is performed in a hospital setting due to the advanced gestational age and the associated risks.

Things To Know

Eligibility & Legality

In Singapore, the process for terminating a pregnancy is governed by specific regulations outlined in the Termination of Pregnancy Act. These guidelines ensure that abortions are performed under regulated conditions to protect the health and rights of the individuals involved.

Here’s an overview of the eligibility requirements and legal framework for accessing abortion services in Singapore:

  1. TOP can only be carried out by a licensed medical practitioner in an approved institution.
  2. TOP is permitted only for the following groups of people:
    • Singapore citizens or the wives of Singapore citizens
    • Holders of work permits or employment passes, or their wives
    • Individuals who have been residents in Singapore for at least four months, though an exception may be made if the procedure is immediately necessary to save the life of a pregnant woman.

Potential Risks of Abortion

As with any medical procedure, abortion carries potential risks and complications. Being aware of these risks can help you prepare for any possible outcomes.

Myths

Abortion is frequently accompanied by misconceptions that may lead to confusion or apprehension. Understanding these misconceptions is essential for making informed decisions.

  1. Abortion Causes Infertility
Most women who have an abortion go on to have healthy pregnancies in the future. There are risks associated with any medical procedure, but complications affecting fertility are rare.

  2. Abortion Is Unsafe
When performed by a qualified medical professional in a licensed facility, abortion is a generally safe procedure. The risks are comparable to those of other medical procedures, and serious complications are rare.

  3. Abortion Leads to Long-Term Psychological Problems
Many women feel relief or experience no negative psychological effects after an abortion. While some may experience emotional distress, this is not universally the case. Support and counselling are available for those who need them.

  4. Abortion is Only for Young or Unmarried Women
Women of all ages, marital statuses, and life circumstances seek abortions. The decision to terminate a pregnancy is a personal one and can be influenced by a wide range of factors, including health, financial stability, and personal readiness.
