Removal of the womb, known as hysterectomy, is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the uterus. In some cases, it may also involve the removal of the cervix, ovaries, and fallopian tubes, depending on the specific indications and the type of hysterectomy performed.
Hysterectomy may be necessary to treat conditions such as uterine fibroids (noncancerous growths in the uterus), endometriosis (when the tissue lining the uterus grows outside of it), adenomyosis (thickening of the uterus), uterine prolapse (when the uterus descends into the vaginal canal), or abnormal uterine bleeding that has not responded to other treatments.
In cases of uterine, ovarian, cervical, or certain types of ovarian cancer, a hysterectomy is performed as part of the cancer treatment.
